As the Netherland’s population ages, the ever-increasing demand for personal care for the elderly continues to grow. Good communication can relieve the pressure on caregivers and ensure a balance between institutional care and personal caregiving. In the ‘Care4Balance’ project an ICT system is being developed to mediate communication among all the parties involved in caregiving.
The elderly themselves will utilise an easy to operate tablet (an ‘intelligent dashboard’). In this way the elderly can interactively exchange information with both their professional and personal caregivers. In addition, sensors will be placed in their homes to gather information about how the elderly move about the space and which appliances they turn on and off.
On the caregivers’ side, an intelligent computer system will analyse the information and balance the burden of care over personal and institutional caregivers.
The ‘Care4Balance’ project aims to demonstrate the concept outlined above using technology currently offered by the consortium partners. It will be tested in ‘living labs’ in three different countries.
