02-12-2019
The EyeBeacons project by Joey van der Bie, researcher at the Digital Life research group at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, has been nominated for the Human Factors NL Application Award / Pieter Rookmaaker Award 2019.
This annual prize is for projects that are a good example of the application of human factors and ergonomics knowledge. According to the jury, EyeBeacons contributes to a sustainable solution for a complex social issue in the field of health care, work and mobility.
The 'EyeBeacons: Wayfinding in Public Spaces' research project was started two years ago in response to questions from interest groups such as the Oogvereniging and Koninklijke Visio. They indicated that the current navigation apps cannot be used properly by people with a visual impairment. Under the leadership of Joey van der Bie, who works at the Digital Life research group, an app has been developed that helps blind and partially sighted people navigate through the city. The user receives vibrations, sounds and spoken text on a smartwatch about the obstacles he encounters along the way.
The prize will be awarded on November 28. during the Human Factors NL Annual Congress 2019.
Human Factors NL is a dynamic platform for everyone who deals with interaction between people and their environment and wants to work for the development and distribution of knowledge about Human Factors and ergonomics in the Netherlands and beyond.
