Innovation in healthcare is not without challenge. New technology and proper care do not often go hand in hand. Nevertheless, steps will need to be made in the near future to realise innovation, in part by new technology, in collaboration with healthcare organisations, educational institutions and research and innovation companies.
The ‘Health-Lab’ initiative’s goal is to establish a real-world experimental environment for healthcare and ICT in the Amsterdam area. ICT can contribute significantly towards solving the problem of rising healthcare demands as a result of ageing populations by making more efficient care possible and by allowing people to live independently longer.
Due to the personal nature of healthcare and the specific target group (the elderly), there are very specific demands made on the use of and the perception of these technologies. For this reason the aspiration is to develop applications in the context of a ‘living-lab’ – together with the end users and health care providers.
‘Health Lab’ is carried out in collaboration with healthcare institutions, knowledge centres and large and small enterprise. The project concentrates on three aspects:

• Establishing and maintaining a platform for healthcare institutions and organisations

• Establishing ‘Living-lab’ locations for design and realisation of innovative solutions for healthcare

• Creating and updating curricula focused on the use of ICT in healthcare for the education of students and adult education
