Sense in the city
Home > Projects > Sense in the city
The creative industry develops products and services in the urban environment in which knowledge about a) location, b) behaviour and c) mood of the user is essential. Often this knowledge is accumulated by human researchers performing observational studies, by which the gathering of large amounts of data and real-time measurements are impossible.
In the ‘Sense In The City’ project, a system is being setup to collect information about people in the public urban spaces – particularly their mood, activity and behaviour. Existing platforms are combined. The system is comprised of a number of reconfigurable behavioural analysis modules, permitting the construction of interactive systems in a simple manner. It can be operated by students and partners of the Centre of Expertise.
To guarantee a rapid startup the project commences with two of the platforms employed at CREATE-IT: the SENSE-OS platform (also used in the COMMIT project ‘Sensei’) and the CITY-SDK platform originating from the like named EU project. The first system focuses on sensor data from mobile platforms, while the second system collects and processes data about individuals in urban environments.
The behavioural analysis methods build on earlier works carried out in the Digital Life Centre in the field of camera surveillance (Oosterhout, 2012), wearable sensors (Englebienne, 2013) and social media (spinoff ‘Greencorn’).
SIM SENSEI City Runner app
In collaboration with the SENSEI and CitySDK projects, a running app was developed that will be used by students in the first week of February.
